Description: Diagram of British Mk IX QF 12 pounder Shrapnel shell, Naval service, 1918. Shell length 8.12 inch, diameter 2.98 inches. Contained 227 bullets (41/lb). Weight filled anf fuzed 12.5 lbs. The shell is of the modern shrapnel generation of 1914 :- with a separate base which screws into the shell has 2-inch fuze hole instead of previous 1-inch G.S. fuze hole the bursting charge is in the form of compressed pellets of gunpowder the central tube is filled with powder pellets to increase dispersal of the bullets, which also takes over the role of the previous primer.For use in the following guns :- QF 12 pounder 12 cwt naval gun QF 12 pounder 18 cwt naval gun
