Image: Quay extinguisher
Description: In this 1888 political cartoon, Senator Matthew Quay (right) drops an extinguisher on former presidential candidate James G. Blaine, who is giving a speech. Quay is Republican National Committee chair and thus Benjamin Harrison's campaign manager. Blaine had given a speech describing business trusts as innocuous, which was against the Republican platform and somewhat controversial. Quay is trying to avoid another unscripted comment that might hurt the campaign, as had happened in 1884 when Rev. Samuel Burchard described the Democrats as the party of "Rum, Romanism and Rebellion" as Blaine looked on and said nothing. Thus, the extinguisher is labeled "anti-Burchard".
