Description: Radford Meadows near Stafford The floodplain of the River Penk here is a designated nature reserve managed by the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust and is used by migrating and breeding birds, but is not usually flooded to this extent. At other times, artificial drainage is impeded by closing sluices to prevent it, and retain some flood waters. Some shallow pools (known as scrapes) have been created to provide the muddy conditions for feeding waders and other wildfowl. The heronry accommodates in excess of twenty breeding pairs each spring. Public access is restricted to organised events only. The hedge on the left conceals the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal.
