Description: On 28 February 1963, former Indian President Dr Rajendra Prasad died. He was the first President of the Republic of India. Prasad joined the Indian National Congress during the Indian independence movement and became a major leader from the region of Bihar. A supporter of Mahatma Gandhi, Prasad was imprisoned by British authorities during the Salt Satyagraha (Salt March) of 1931 and the Quit India movement of 1942. When India became a Republic in 1950, Prasad was elected its first President by the Constituent Assembly. He served two terms as President and relinquished the role in 1962. He spent the last few months of his life in retirement at the Sadaqat Ashram in Patna. This image shown here is found in the Walter Nash collection. It was signed by Rajendra Prasad and sent to Nash in 1958. Walter Nash was Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1957 to 1960. After defeat in the 1960 election Nash remained MP for Hutt until his death in 1968.
