Description: A bust of an unknown citizen in the realist republican tradition. The bust has previously been thought to be Emperor Galba and alternatively as Lucius Calpurnius Piso or Crassus, however these identifications remain speculative and debatable. The academic consensus is that the date is late Republican (1st C. BC). Refer to: John Pollini, From Republic to Empire: Rhetoric, Religion, and Power in the Visual Culture (Norman OK, 2012) p. 50. ISBN 9780806188164 Wolf-Rüdiger Megow, Republikanische Bildnis-Typen (Frankfurt, 2005) p. 75 ISBN 9783631530412 The bust is in the Louvre collection and the catalogue entry states: Français : Inconnu Environs de l'ère chrétienne Marbre H. : 26 cm.
