Description: Secretary of War Redfield Proctor's signature from the Franklin House Hotel Guest Register. The Franklin House was the primary hotel in Rutland, VT during the stagecoach and early railroad period. It was located adjacent to the Rutland County Courthouse. The hotel burned in 1868 and was not rebuilt. This guest register dates from Sept. 1854 - April 1855 (Redfield Proctor stayed at the hotel several times during this period and this signature comes from October 3, 1854). This register is in the private collection of H. Blair Howell.
