Description: Remains of guillotine gate, Wappenshall Lock, Shropshire The Trench Branch of the Shrewsbury and Newport Canal linked Wappenshall Junction with the foot of the Trench Inclined Plane. This branch, which was built some time before the Newport line, had unusual locks which measured 80ft long by only 6ft 6ins wide, to accommodate four tub boats (20ft x 6ft 4 ins) at a time. The bottom gates were of the guillotine type and the remains of one set of the gear for these gates is seen here. This lock was the last one before Wappenshall Junction was reached. Photographed in April 1964.
