Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Description: Von Richthofen as a newly promoted major general and featured speaker at the Lüneburg Nazi Party Day Rally, summer 1939. After his return from Spain von Richthofen was a national hero and very much in demand as a speaker at Nazi events, factory meetings, and so on. Von Richthofen was personally asked by Goering to attend these events. As a military man, von Richthofen could have avoided these rallies, but he agreed to appear because of his strong belief in Hitler. Wolfram von Richthofen, born in 1895, was a German World War I flying ace who later became a Generalfeldmarschall in the Luftwaffe during World War II. He initially served in the cavalry during World War I, transitioning to the German Imperial Air Service. Post-war, he joined the Reichswehr and later the Luftwaffe, contributing to the Spanish Civil War. In WWII, he commanded Fliegerkorps VIII, playing a crucial role in the Polish and French Campaigns. Richthofen excelled on the Eastern Front during the Crimean Campaigns in 1942. Despite his competence in air power, he had connections to German mistreatment of prisoners of war and civilians. Richthofen died in 1945 from a brain tumor while in American captivity, avoiding potential war crime prosecution.
