Description: River Swilgate sweeps past Tewkesbury Abbey The abbey tower is the largest surviving Norman tower in existence, measuring 14 sq metres and is 45m tall. At one stage the central tower had a wooden spire, rising a further 39m. This collapsed in Easter 1559, due to neglect and was never replaced.
