Description: The setting for The Breakfast Table is Charleston, the home of the painter Vanessa Bell. For a time Fry and Bell were lovers but by 1918, the date of this painting, the relationship had ended although they remained close friends. Both were leading lights of what is now known as the Bloomsbury Group, a collection of artists, writers and critics that took their name from the Bloomsbury district in London. According to sources the picture was painted at Charleston during the Christmas of 1918. Fry's two children, Pamela and Julian, are having breakfast.
