Description: Romney met Wortley Montagu in Venice in 1775. The exotic Turkish dress and manners that Montagu had adopted during his travels in the East appealed to the artist, who painted this portrait for himself and took it back to England to demonstrate his success in imbibing the colorism of the Venetian school.
