Description: A group of Royal Engineers construct the airfield runway on Christmas Island during construction of the British military base which provided the headquarters of the nuclear test programme on Christmas Island, November 1956. An auxiliary airstrip was already in use and a 7000 foot runway suitable for bombers had been completed.
