Description: SÁNCHEZ DE TOVAR, FERNANDO. D.1384. Painted portrait on vellum of Spanish Admiral Fernando Sánchez de Tovar, "El Sr Almirante de Castilla Fernan Sanches de Tobar," 306 x 210 mm, 16th-century, with contemporary manuscript description in ink to verso, some soiling to margins. Admiral Fernando Sánchez de Tovar was supreme commander of the Castilian fleet under Enrique II. The architect of the Castilian Navy's great successes along the coasts of Flanders and England in the late 14th-century, Sánchez de Tovar was the first to lead a flotilla up the Thames in 1380, a model for future attacks against England. He died in 1384 in Lisbon with the plague.
