Description: Photograph of the statue of Samuel Chapin, known as The Puritan, in Springfield, Massachusetts, which was cast by Augustus St. Gaudens in 1887. Photographed in 1905 for the Detroit Publishing Company, probably to be made into a postcard. The photograph is now held by Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division Washington, D.C. 20540 USA: http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/det.4a30247. The inscription on the statue reads, "1595 anno domini 1675 / Deacon Samuel Chapin / one of the founders of Springfield."
