Description: Scutellaria nana or dwarf skullcap. This diminutive forb of the mint family shares some habitat with Polygala subspinosa on our clay and basalt tablelands, but generally occupies a lower position in valleys. I enjoy this species because close inspection reveals much to appreciate in an annual that escapes the attention of most. The velvety leaves all reach upward while the blooms of cream, gold and lavender stretch outward. It's understated, but with real classy vibes.
