Description: This diagram illustrates hydrolysis of a silicate mineral such as quartz. A water molecule breaks a bond between silicon and oxygen and is itself broken in the process, attaching a hydroxyl group to the silicon in place of the original oxygen and a hydrogen atom to the original oxygen in place of the silicon. This is an important reaction both in the melting process that produces magma and in weathering of silicate minerals at the Earth's surface.
