Description: St Mary's parish church, Bruton, Somerset: part of the chest tomb of Sir Maurice Berkeley (died 1581) and his two wives. Sir Maurice was Standard Bearer to Henry VIII, Edward VI and Queen Elizabeth I. Bruton Abbey and Church were granted to Sir Maurice in 1546 and his family eventually became Baron Berkeley of Stratton (1658), acquiring land in London for their townhouse, and giving their name to Berkeley Square, Stratton Street and Bruton Street in Mayfair. His wives died in 1559 and 1585.
