Description: Redbeds in the Permian/Triassic of Wyoming, USA. This is a typical exposure of redbeds of the Spearfish Formation in the Black Hills area of western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming. The Black Hills are cored by Precambrian basement consisting of igneous and metamorphic rocks. This central area is surrounded & flanked by uplifted Phanerozoic sedimentary rocks. The Spearfish Formation is an upper Paleozoic to lower Mesozoic succession of reddish-brown colored, terrestrial, hematite-rich siliciclastic sedimentary rocks - principally relatively soft mudshales. Stratigraphy: Spearfish Formation, attributed to the Permian and/or Triassic Locality: construction cut behind a Conoco gasoline station in the town of Sundance, southeatern Crook County, northeastern Wyoming, USA (44° 25' 00.11" North, 104° 20' 45.15" West)
