Description: Srirangapur, also called Srirangapuram, is a village in Wanaparthy (Wanaparthi) district. It is located on the banks of Ratna Pushkarni – a historic, major man made water reservoir and a irrigation infrastructure project of the Vijayanagara rulers. Srirangapur is about 175 kilometers south of Hyderabad (NH 44), and about 65 kilometers north of Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. The Sri Ranganayaka Swamy temple is a Vijayanagara era temple built by Krishnadeva Raya, but damaged during the Deccan Sultanate era campaigns. The temple was rebuilt in the 18th-century, and is a part of the five temples within the Sri Krishnadevaraya Group of Temples. It is a Vaishnava temple themed around the sleeping Vishnu legends. Dasavatara and other Vaishnava motifs are found all over the temple. The temple is Dravidian style with gopura and vimana architecture. It is a moderate sized temple with a large following of regional Hindus. The temple previously helped preserve Hindu manuscripts and was attached to a matha and school, along with a small park. Of these, the park remains active. The temple sits on a small hillock overlooking the lake, and has several levels (talas). A mandapa in the lower level has a dedicated Chitrasala (image gallery, museum) with dozens of gold leaf covered paintings of Hindu gods, goddesses and mythology. These are in the 15th to 18th-century Indian style, with a three dimensional format (the images project out in a form where a relief is integrated with the painting).
