Description: Schofield-Coultate memorial on north interior wall of the former St Mark's Church, Woodhouse, Leeds, West Yorkshire, a Grade II listed building. The building was a Waterloo Church, designed by Atkinson & Sharpe and consecrated on 13 January 1826. It was closed in 2001, and was purchased by Gateway Church in 2008. It was then renovated, after which most of the contents, including pews, pulpit and font, were removed. The inscription says: "In remembrance of William Schofield, nephew of John Coultate who died on the 31st of December 1857 aged 62 years. Also of Hannah, relict of the late Thomas Craven, and the beloved sister of John Coultate Esq. who died on the 1st of January 1860, in her 91st year. Also of Alice the beloved sister of the aforesaid John Coultate Esquire who died on the 26th of December 1863 in her 82nd year. Also of the above named John Coultate Esquire of this town who died on the 21st January 1864 in his 85th year. Therefore pray thee, help thy servants whom thou has redeemed with thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with thy saints, in glory everlasting." (From Book of Common Prayer) John Coultate was a currier (preparer) of leather, employing 4-6 men. The people mentioned in the inscription all lived together in one household in Leeds. (Information from 1851/61 Censuses).
