Description: Frederick Elliott's painting The Departure of the SS Cornwall. This painting depicts the departure from Brisbane of the first Queensland contingent for the South African War, on Wednesday 1 November 1899. SS Cornwall was a Federal Steam Navigation Co steamship that became a troopship to take the 260 men and 300 horses that the colony of Queensland sent to fight the Boers. In preparation she had been cleaned, painted and outfitted with a new galley and a bakehouse. The force was divided up into two companies, and each company occupied one side of the ship.
