Description: Battery of Stiger Vortex rain-making guns at Charleville, 1902. The Stiger Vortex gun was an idea from Professor Clement Wragge, a Queensland (1887–1903) meteorologist who had 10 guns built in Brisbane and taken to Charleville in an attempt to break the drought. Guns were then placed in different parts of the town and on 2 September, 1902, gunpowder was emptied into the breech of each gun and then detonated. No significant rain fell but the drought did break later that year.
