Description: Bronze two-part pass (paizi) with four character inscription in the Tangut script inlaid in silver. Western Xia (1038-1227). The Tangut inscription reads "𗿢𗯼𘆝𗪊" meaning "By imperial command, a pass to burn the horses" (i.e. to ride with great urgency) (translated as 敕燃馬牌 in Chinese). Four Tangut characters reading top-to-bottom right-to-left: L2806 "command, order, edict", L5185 "to burn, catch fire", L0764 "horse", L3697 "paizi" [Li Fanwen, Xia-Han Zidian 2008]. At the bottom of the left half and top of the right half is a faint seal script form character "𗿢" meaning "Imperial command" (same as first character of main inscription). National cat. no. B52-001.
