Description: Tank trap with graffiti. Tank traps and other beach defences were built in 1940 in anticipation of an invasion by Germany. Most traps are plain concrete cubes but some have war time graffiti. This unusually richly decorated block lies near to the mouth of the river Ythan at Newburgh, Aberdeenshire. The photograph was taken in January 2004 when strong winds and high tides had exposed the block from the sands. The block has been signed by Louis Lawson, presumably one of the men making the defences, and shows caricatures of Winston Churchill and Adolf Hitler, who is looking up at a falling bomb. At the bottom of the block is the chilling message HITLER'S GRAVEYARD.
