Description: The Church of St Leonard, Kirkstead The church stands just inside the boundary of the ruins of Kirkstead Abbey. The tiny chapel, measuring 42ft x 19ft, may well have been built as a chantry chapel in memory of Robert de Tattershall who died in 1212. St Leonard’s is as built in the first years of the 13th century, except for the roof. At the intersection of the ceiling ribs are splendid bosses carved with foliage and the Lamb of God. Part of the chancel screen is probably the same date as the building and the earliest in existence. The narrow west door and the newel stair are original. In the chancel is part of a mutilated piscina and an aumbry in the north wall.
