JOHNSON AT GRAYSVILLE On the balcony of this littlecottage at Graysville, Georgia, stands (leneral Richard \V. Johnson, ready to advance with his cavalry divisionin the vanguard of the direct movement upon the Confederates strongly posted at Dalton. Shermans cavalry forces under Stone-man and Garrard were not yet fully equipped and joined the army after the campaign had opened. General Richard \V. Johnsonsdivision of Thomas command, with General Palmers division, was given the honor of heading the line of march when the Federalsgot in motion on May 5th. The same troops (Palmers division) had made the same march in February, sent by Grant to engageJohnston at Dalton during Shermans Meridian campaign. Johnson was a West Pointer: he had gained his cavalry training in theMexican War, and had fought the Indians on the Texas border. He distinguished himself at Corinth, and rapidly rose to the com-mand of a division in Buells army.
