Description: The Founding of Maryland, 1634. Oil on canvas, 132 x 185 cm. Painted by Emmanuel Leutze in 1860 while visiting St. Mary's City, Maryland, the site of Maryland's first colonial settlement. Founding of Maryland from a painting by Emmanuel Leutze "An idealized version of the founding of Maryland, Indians greet Leonard Calvert and his 200 settlers at the mouth of the Potomac River in 1634. A Jesuit priest celebrates the first Mass in the colony, conceived as a haven for English and Irish Catholics. Later, the Toleration Act guaranteed established policy: No Christian should 'be any ways troubled' for 'his or her religion'".ref
