Description: Looking southwest at "The Hiker," the Spanish War Veterans Memorial on Memorial Drive at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, in the United States. The memorial refers to both the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War. The statue is of a soldier dressed in the uniform of the U.S. Army during these wars. Inscribed into the granite base are the name of the memorial ("The Hiker"), the dates of the conflicts, and a bronze plaque in the form of a cross listing the various theaters of the wars. Sculptor Theodora Alice Ruggles Kitson created the statue, which was first unveiled in Minnesota in May 1906. At least 50 replicas of her work were created. The Spanish War Veterans Memorial is one of these replicas. The memorial was dedicated on July 24, 1965.
