Description: The Liberty Tree, Carlow An impressive fountain off Hanover Street in the town centre. The macabre imagery is a deliberate statement of thought provocation; the stem of the tree is made up of clambering skeletons. It commemorates the 1798 Rising of the United Irishmen. There were several hundred rebels slain in Carlow town and their remains are buried in the 'Croppies Grave', in nearby Graiguecullen. The Liberty Tree was designed by sculptor John Behan who has skilfully created a fine memorial.
