Description: 150 Benefit Street, Providence. Built in 1762, extended and re-modelled in 1850-51, 1867 and 1904-6. On May 4 1776 Rhode Island renounced its allegiance to George III. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Lafayette were all entertained here. It served as State House until 1904. This section on Benefit Street was added in 1867 by James Bucklin. Since 1975 the building has housed the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission
