Description: The Ponte Vecchio bridge in Florence, damaged by the retreating Germans who blew up buildings at each, 14 August 1944. View of the damage to the Ponte Vecchio from the east. The German forces destroyed all of the bridges over the River Arno with the exception of the Ponte Vecchio before evacuating Florence on 11 August 1944. The Ponte Vecchio was blocked by demolishing the houses at each end and mining the bridge.
