Description: The Limerick Seaman’s Memorial statue is now dedicated to the Limerick and Clare men who lost their lives on three Irish merchant ships: SS Kerry Head, SS Irish Pine and SS Clonlara at sea during World War Two. Although Ireland remained neutral during the World World Two, Ireland's ships were still attacked as they were mistaken to be British/Allied. Originally this monument at Bishop's Quay in Limerick in was in remembrance of the lost Shannon Estuary seamen and it was not specific to wartime casualties. It's back is to the River Shannon and it is beside the Shannon Bridge. The main section of the memorial is in the shape of an anchor. There is a base rock which serves to outline and draw emphasis to the anchor itself. Written on this rock beside the monument there is a note explaining what the statue is commemorating. On the base of the statue is the list of men who died at sea during World War Two which was added in 2004. This was because their bodies were never recovered and the families of the men wanted them to be remembered in some way.
