THE FIRST UNITED STATES REGULAR CAVALRY The sturdy selt-reliaiuc of theso xabreiirs. standing at ease though without a trace of slouchiness, stamps them as the direct successorsof Marion, the Swamp Fox, and of Light-Horse Harry Lee of the War for Independence. The regiment has been in continuousservice from 1833 to the present day. Organized as the First Dragoons and sent to the southwest to watch the Pawnees and Comanchesat the time it began its existence, the regiment had its name clianged to the First United States Regular Cavalry on July 27, 1801, whenMcClellan assumed command of the Eastern army. This photograph was taken at Brandy Station in February, 1864. The regimentat tliis time was attached to the Reserve Brigade under General Wesley Merritt.
