Behind the gingerbread man came a child with flaxen hairand merry blue eyes, dressed in white pajamas, with sandalson the soles of its pretty bare feet. The child looked aroundsmiling and thrust its hands into the pockets of the pajamas.Close after it came a big rubber bear, walking erect on itshind feet. The bear had twinkling black eyes and its bodylooked as if it had been pumped full of air. Following these curious visitors were two tall, thin menand two short, fat men, all four dressed in gorgeous uniforms. 22O Text Appearing After Image: KING DOUGH, THE HEAD BOOLEYWAG, AND PARA BRUIN The Road to Oz Ozmas High Chamberlain now hurried forward to an-nounce the names of the new arrivals, calling out in a loudvoice: His Gracious and Most Edible Majesty, King Doughthe First, Ruler of the Two Kingdoms of Hiland and Lo-land. Also the Head Booleywag of his Majesty, known asChick the Cherub, and their faithful friend Para Bruin, therubber bear. These great personages bowed low as their names werecalled, and Dorothy hastened to introduce them to the assem-bled company. They were the first foreign arrivals, and thefriends of Princess Ozma were polite to them and tried tomake them feel that they were welcome. Chick the Cherub shook hands with every one, includingBillina, and was so joyous and frank and full of good spiritsthat John Doughs Head Booleywag at once became a primefavorite. Is it a boy or a girl? whispered Dorothy. Dont know, said Button-Bright.
