Description: Photograph of Thomas Mundy Peterson, first African-American to vote under the terms of the 15th Amendment to the United States Constitution, wearing a medal given him in 1884 by the town to celebrate that fact. The medal, as stated on a printed label on back of the card: "Inscription on the Medal. Presented by citizens of Perch Amboy, N.J., to Thomas Peterson, the first colored voter in the United States under the provisions of the Fifteenth Amendment, at an election held in that city March 31st, 1870." The National Museum of African American History and Culture states the photo was a "memento for the medal presentation ceremony".
