The short contest known as Dunmores War, in theannals of Western Virginia, was signalized by one ofthe bloodiest and hardest fought battles, in which theIndians ever engaged. This conflict is known as thebattle of Point Pleasant. The troops were dividedinto two bodies—the first being under the commandof Gen. Andrew Lewis, q,nd the second under theorders of Gov. Dunmore himself. Gen. Lewis had hisrendezvous at Camp Union. There he received ordersto meet the Governor at the mouth of the Kanawha,on the 2d of October, 1774. On the 11th of September, Gen. Lewis, at the headof about 1100 men, commenced his march throughan unknown and trackless wilderness. On the 30th,he reached the mouth of the Kanawha, where he wasdisappointed in not meeting the Governor. On the9th of October, Gen. Lewis received information thatthe plan of the campaign had been changed, and alsoan order to march direct to the towns on the Sciota,where the other division would join him. Accord-ingly, preparations were made to move forward thenext day.
