Description: Illustration of "The Kaiser's Dream", from the Christmas 1890 issue of Truth dedicated to "hypnotism". The image accompanied a description of a dream of the "young German Kaiser", Wilhelm II. The "dream" is a nightmare, the Kaiser dreams he is disrespected by his people, and then declares war on Russia and loses, and as a consequence of this war all monarchies of Europe are abolished, Then from the wall before me / There slowly was unrolled / A brand-new map of Europe, / On which, in type of gold, / I read how Kings and Kaisers / Had wholly passed away, / In the efulgent sunlight / Of democratic Day! / Yes; sick at heart I studied / That renovated map, / With its allied Republics, / The fruit of my mishap! / And as 'Potz-tausend Teufel!' / From me in fury broke, / Your summons, TRUTH, aroused me, / And with a start I woke! In the image, the dreaming Kaiser sees a transformed Europe: All European nations are transformed into Republics, and Russia is reduced to a "desert". A radiant Phrygian cap has risen over Europe. Bottom left: the Kaiser standing on the French tricolore. center-left: the Kaiser pleading with Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales, who are flanked by Tsar Alexander and Emperor Franz Josef. top left: the impoverished monarchs are entering a workhouse. This image was reproduced in the appendix to Hausen's German translation of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion (1921). [1]
