Description: View of the now-vanished town of Wehrum, PA, in 1923. The image shows First, Second, Third, and Fourth Streets. The street that is faintly distinguishable in the foreground was known as "The Bowerly." Note that in New York City the street in lower Manhattan that is known as "The Bowery" intersects with New York's First, Second, Third and Fourth Streets (and, eventually, Broadway). This circumstance was possibly a playful reference to America's greatest city by those who originally laid out the town of Wehrum and named its streets "Broadway, The Bowery, First St., Second St., Third St., and Fourth St." Today, the Pennsylvania hike/bike "Ghost Trail" generally follows the track of The Bowery as it passes through a Wehrum that no longer exists. It is perhaps a graphic illustration of life's impermanence and transisitory nature that, apart from a series of foundations that are hidden in the woods, none of what is seen in this photograph exists today.
