Description: Description from Historicalautographs.co.uk: Autograph Letter Signed 'Wm. H. Prescott', to 'Dear Ford' [Richard Ford]‚ praising the arrangements. 1 page 7 x 4 inches‚ heavy traces of mounting at corners on verso. 3 July [probably 1850]. William Hickling Prescott (1796-1859)‚ historian‚ was much fêted on both sides of the Atlantic. This letter probably dates from his visit to England in 1850. From his published letters we know that Prescott dined with Richard Ford on 11 June 1850‚ and that various Royal engagements followed. In this letter‚ Prescott writes: "Nothing can be more charming than the arrangements. I am truly glad that you are in for it with the tights as well as myself. I will be ready for you at the hour appointed." Tights‚ in Victorian England‚ were the tight-fitting breeches worn as part of Court Dress.
