Though thou art changeful, unchanging is mydoom! Daland comes on deck and is astonishedto see the strange ship. He wakes the Steers-man and they hail the stranger, who asksDaland to give him shelter in his home,offering him treasure. The Dutchman:Oh, grant to me a little while thy home,And of thy friendship thou wilt not repent;With treasure brought from every clime and countryMy ship is richly laden: wilt thou bargain? On hearing that Daland has a daughterhe proposes marriage. The simple Nor-wegian is dazzled by such an honor from aman apparently so wealthy, and freely con-sents, provided his daughter is pleased withthe stranger. The wind changes and Dalandsails for his home, the Dutchman promising tofollow at once.
