Description: Auckland Libraries Heritage Collections JTD-12A-03245 View of A. J. Routley's general store known as the Waikumete Cash Store situated on the corner of Valley Road and West Coast Road. It is a weatherboard building with hip roof. There are four people standing under the shop's verandah. Three are wearing white aprons. A man is standing beside a horse and cart outside the store. Fascia signage states that the premises is a Telegraph and Post Office, and Telegraph Bureau. Historical note: Valley Road became Glendale Road on 1 February 1969. (Source: J.T. Diamond Collection, Research Papers, Box 55, No.789 (Envelope), newspaper cutting: Borough of Glen Eden, Notice of Special Order, Changing of Street Names, in Western Leader, 6 August 1968). The first grocer at Glen Eden was Tom Clark. He had a store in the front room of the house nearly opposite Waikaukau Road, later occupied by Spearpoint, the photographer. Mr. Clark travelled the district delivering orders and also carrying goods for sale in the 1890s. Joseph Hibbs built the store in the photo in 1895. About 1900 he sold out to Mr. Markland who soon sold out to Mr. Boyd. Mr. Bennet followed then Abe Routley who, after running it as a general store selling all types of merchandise, sold out to Hutchinson Bros. who in the 1950s closed it down.
