Description: Standing on the Virginia shoreline, looking southeast at the Washington Aqueduct gravity weir dam on the Great Falls of the Potomac River near Washington, D.C., in the United States. The dam began construction in 1864 as part of the Washington Aqueduct, which was designed to provide large amounts of drinkable water to the District of Columbia and city of Washington. It was completed in 1867. The dam originally extended from the Maryland shore to Conn's Island in the center of the river. In 1889, the extension of the dam from Conn's Island to the Virginia shoreline was completed. The dam is made of cut stone, and anchored to the riverbed. It is 1,176 feet (358 m) long. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the Maryland border extends to the high-water mark on the Virginia shoreline, which means this dam (except for one abutment) is located in Maryland.
