Description: Wesley H. Passon (1864-1933) was a Black educator who made many important contributions toward the preservation of African-American history, most notably a summary of the history of the African-American population in Austin, Texas. He was the principle of many Schools in Austin, beginning with Wheatville, which was founded in 1897 by James Wheat and located just west of the University of Texas at Austin. Other schools include Blackshear, West Austin High, and Clarksville School. His compendium entitled: "The Historical and Biographical Souvenir and Program of the 25th Anniversary of Metropolitan AME Church, Austin, Texas 1882-1907" remains to this day an important resource for scholars, city planners, and many others. The W.H. Passon Historical Society, which is named to honor him, is now located within the Southgate-Lewis House.
