Description: Whitelands Mill, Ashton-under-Lyne Former cotton mill. The engine house with its tall arched window is closest. The reflection is marred by the presence of little shoals of ice that are non-reflective. The water is the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. The first Whitelands Mill was built in 1875 and powered by a Wolstenholme & Rye steam engine of 600 horsepower, christened 'Stamford' & 'Warrington'. This is the No. 2 mill of 1883 and A S Roberts lists the engine as an 1100 horsepower horizontal twin tandem compound by J Musgrave of Bolton. Both mills were closed in 1933 and No. 1 was demolished soon after.
