Description: The Women's Club of Evanston (1913). The Women's Club of Evanston (WCE) was founded in 1889 in the home of Elizabeth Harbert, who became the first president. The WCE established a committee for the 1893 World Columbian Exposition to help clean up the city before the convention. In 1891, the members of the club treated Evanston residents during an outbreak of typhoid fever; the closest hospital was Cook County Hospital (now Stroger) in Chicago. This building was built for the club in 1913. One of their first actions was to organize a War Service Committee to teach residents how to plant vegetable gardens to help with the national rationing of food. The WCE provided meals to 200 homes when the Spanish Flu broke out. The club hosted a large celebration after the war with hundreds of guests, including Chief Justice William Howard Taft. The building became a Red Cross training center after the outbreak of World War II, while members entertained troops at Fort Sheridan and Great Lakes. The WCE continues to be an important philanthropic hub in Evanston.
