Description: This is the first official seal of the Zoological Society of San Diego (now known as San Diego Zoo Global), used from February 17, 1917 to January 1955 (see http://library.sandiegozoo.org/history.htm). The seal depicts a grizzly bear, and was replaced with a new seal in response to the grizzly becoming extinct in California. This specific image was scanned from a book published in 1953, however the seal itself is believed to be in the public domain as it was first published prior to January 1, 1923, appearing on various letters and other documents published by the Zoological Society of San Diego beginning in 1917.
