History of It's-It Ice Cream
The It's-It ice cream sandwich was created in 1928. A man named George Whitney invented it. He owned a shop at Playland at the Beach in San Francisco. Playland was a fun amusement park near Ocean Beach.
How the Name "It's-It" Started
There are two stories about how the name "It's-It" came to be. One story says George Whitney was trying different ideas. When he made the perfect ice cream sandwich, he shouted, "It's-It!" This sandwich had vanilla ice cream, oatmeal cookies, and chocolate.
Another story says the name came from a cow. Playland used to have cow races. Someone asked which cow won, and the answer was "It." George Whitney might have named his treat after that winning cow.
From Park Treat to Store Shelf
For almost 45 years, you could only buy an It's-It at George Whitney's shop. This was until Playland closed down in 1972. After Playland was gone, George Mavros took over the It's-It business. He sold the ice cream sandwiches from another spot near Ocean Beach.
In 1974, the Shamieh brothers and their family bought the company. They started making the ice cream sandwiches using machines. First, they had a factory in San Francisco. Then, in 1976, they moved to the current factory in Burlingame. Now, you can buy It's-It products in many supermarkets and convenience stores.
New Flavors and Products
Over the years, It's-It Ice Cream added more flavors. In the 1980s, they introduced chocolate, strawberry, mint, and cappuccino. Green tea flavor came out in 2016. They also offer a pumpkin flavor sometimes. The company also created other ice cream treats. These include the "Super Sundae," the "Big Daddy," the "Super Cone," and the "Chips It."
