The Story of It's-It Ice Cream
How the It's-It Was Invented
The It's-It ice cream sandwich was created in 1928. A man named George Whitney invented it. He was one of the first owners of a fun park called Playland at the Beach. This park was in San Francisco, right across from Ocean Beach.
There are two stories about how the name "It's-It" came to be.
- One story says George Whitney was trying out different food ideas. When he put together the ice cream, cookies, and chocolate, he shouted, "It's-It!" because it was perfect.
- Another story says that Playland had cow races. Someone asked which cow won, and the answer was "It."
From Playland to Supermarkets
For almost 45 years, you could only buy the It's-It at George Whitney's shop. This was while Playland was open. The park was taken down in 1972. After Playland closed, the It's-It business went to George Mavros. He kept selling the ice cream sandwiches near Ocean Beach.
In 1974, the Shamieh brothers and their family bought the It's-It business. They started making the ice cream sandwiches using machines. First, they had a factory in downtown San Francisco. Then, in 1976, they moved to their current factory in Burlingame.
Today, you can find It's-It products in many places. They are sold in supermarkets and convenience stores. In the 1980s, new flavors like chocolate, strawberry, mint, and cappuccino were added. Green tea flavor came out in 2016. You can also find pumpkin flavor sometimes. The company also makes other frozen treats. These include the "Super Sundae," the "Big Daddy," the "Super Cone," and the "Chips It."
