Early Life and Becoming a Priest
Iván Persa was born on April 2, 1861, in a village called Ižakovci. This village is now part of the Municipality of Beltinci in Slovenia. His parents, István Persa and Mária Kolár, were farmers.
He decided to become a priest and was officially ordained on July 14, 1885. This meant he could begin his work in the church.
His Work as a Priest
After becoming a priest, Iván Persa served in several places:
- From 1885 to 1887, he worked as a curate (a priest who helps the main priest) in Grad. While there, he helped to establish a group called the Association of Jesus's Heart.
- From 1887 to 1913, he was a priest in the villages of Alsószölnök and Felsőszölnök. These villages are near a town called Szentgotthárd. During this time, he also helped to start other community groups.
His Writings
In 1898, Iván Persa wrote a book in the Prekmurje dialect. This dialect is a special way of speaking Slovene that was used in his home region. The book was titled Od vnouge i velke miloscse i pomoucsi szvétoga skapulera. It was about the "holy scapular," which is a piece of cloth worn by some Catholics as a sign of their faith.
Later Life and Death
By 1913, Iván Persa became the priest in Pečarovci, where he served at St. Sebastian's Church. He continued his work there until he passed away on September 26, 1935.
