Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ivan V. Lalić (born June 8, 1931 – died July 28, 1996) was a famous Serbian and Yugoslav poet. He also translated poems from English, French, and German into his own language.

Ivan V. Lalić's Early Life and Family

Ivan V. Lalić was born in Belgrade. His father, Vlajko, was a journalist. His grandfather, Isidor Bajić, was a composer. Ivan's poems often talk about his happy childhood.

However, he also went through two difficult experiences as a teenager. In 1944, many of his school friends in Belgrade died in an air-raid. He wrote about this in his poem "Zardjala igla" (A rusty needle). Lalić said that these war experiences shaped everything he wrote. Another sad event was losing his mother, Ljubica Bajić, to tuberculosis in 1946.

Education and Career

Ivan V. Lalić finished high school in Zagreb. He then studied law there. In Zagreb, he met Branka Kašnar, who was studying English and music. They got married in 1956. Ivan called her "the spirit behind my poems." She was a big inspiration for his writing throughout his life.

Ivan V. Lalić published his first poems in 1952. His first collection of poems came out in 1955. His last collection was published in 1996, the year he passed away.

He first worked as a literary editor for Radio Zagreb. In 1961, he moved to Belgrade. There, he became the Secretary of the Yugoslav Writer's Union. From 1979 until he retired in 1993, he worked as an editor for the Nolit publishing house in Belgrade.

Family Life and Later Years

Ivan and Branka Lalić spent their summers with their family in Rovinj, a town in Istria. They had two sons. Their older son, Vlajko, sadly died in a sailing accident in 1989. Ivan V. Lalić passed away suddenly in Belgrade in 1996. His wife Branka and his younger son Marko survived him.

What His Poems Are About

A writer named Celia Hawkesworth said that memory was very important in Lalić's work. She explained that memory helps us remember happy personal moments. It also lets us connect with the past. This helps us feel like we are part of something bigger. Even when things change, memory helps us hold onto what is important.

His Impact on Poetry

Lalić is known as one of the best poets from Yugoslavia and Serbia. Aleksandar Jovanović, another writer, said that Lalić's work is among the best Serbian poetry ever.

People outside of Serbia also admired Lalić's poems. His books have been translated into six languages. These include English, French, Italian, Polish, Hungarian, and Macedonian. Some of his individual poems have appeared in more than 20 languages. Critics in the UK described his work as "vital and intense." They also said his poems had a "magisterial transcendent quality." His "lyrics" were "ablaze with successes of metaphor." They had an "irresistible blend of private lyricism and public force."
