History
How Theatre Began in Jönköping
People have enjoyed theatre in Jönköping for a very long time. Shows were first held in the 1600s. Back then, they used temporary buildings for performances.
The First Theatre Buildings
Jönköping got its very first proper theatre building in the 1770s. Later, in 1825, a wooden theatre was built in the same spot where the current theatre stands today.
The Modern Theatre Building
The theatre building you see now is not the original wooden one. It was officially opened on December 2, 1904. This new building replaced the older wooden theatre. It has been a place for plays and concerts ever since.
